It is one of Uganda’s oldest and most biologically diverse rainforests, with over 400 plant species, 120 mammal species, and 350 bird species, including the Albertine Rift endemic. It is also known for protecting a large population of mountain gorillas, with an estimated 600 living there. Aside from monkeys and baboons, you can also see chimpanzees and baboons in the park.

The park was established as a National Park in 1991 and declared a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site in 1994 to protect our dearer mountain gorillas.
