For the best chance at securing a gorilla trekking permit in either Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, travelers are advised to make their reservations between three and six months in advance of their desired trekking date. Therefore, it is recommended that you make reservations in advance to avoid disappointment.

In both Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, gorilla trekking begins at the park headquarters during hours of the morning with a training on the park’s rules, regulations, and expectations. After the briefing, you will be split into groups of eight, with each group going on a trek with a different habituated gorilla family and led by a park guide who is knowledgeable about the paths. Because mountain gorillas are always on the move in search of food, a trek to see them can last anywhere from thirty minutes to seven hours.
